Michigan-Ohio Rivalry Heats Up As Wolverines Target Linked With Buckeyes

Monsanna Torbert Jr. is one of the most coveted cornerbacks in the 2027 recruiting class. The four-star prospect from Princeton High School in Cincinnati has 34 scholarship offers and back-to-back official visits to two of college football’s biggest rivals.

Torbert arrived in Columbus a day early for his Ohio State visit, which will last through the weekend.

"I'm very excited for this official visit, to just really see what all the university has to offer," Torbert told Eleven Warriors. "I can see the academic part, just the inside of Ohio State, and spend time with Coach Ryan Day."

The young cornerback officially decommitted from Indiana on May 18 after being committed since January. Since then, both Ohio State and Michigan have pursued him vigorously.

Ohio State has no cornerbacks in its 2027 class yet. That makes Torbert a genuine priority for Ryan Day's staff heading into the summer. The Buckeyes have 13 commits overall, led by five-star edge DJ Jacobs and five-star wide receiver Jamier Brown.

Columbus also has a geographic edge here. Cincinnati to Columbus is roughly 90 minutes. Ann Arbor is almost four hours away. Day can make a strong case for playing close to home.

Michigan is not backing down, though. Torbert has his Ann Arbor official visit lined up for June 19. He has been vocal about what draws him to the Wolverines.

"The new defensive staff," Torbert told Rivals. "Defensive guru, the DC coach Jay Hill. Michigan is a powerhouse; they're always good. The DC/corners coach, I have a great relationship with him."

Torbert jumped from No. 139 to No. 102 overall in the 247Sports Composite since his decommitment from Indiana. The upgrade in national ranking reflects how much interest has grown in the months since he reopened his recruitment.

He cancelled his planned Notre Dame official visit. That leaves Ohio State and Michigan as the two clear frontrunners. Back-to-back official visits to both programs make this one of the more intriguing recruiting battles of the 2027 cycle.

What Landing Torbert Would Mean for Michigan's 2027 Class

Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has built real momentum in his first full recruiting cycle.

The Wolverines have been especially aggressive at cornerback, with Jay Hill as defensive coordinator. Hill was previously at Utah, where he built one of the better secondaries in the Pac-12.

So, landing a prospect of Torbert's caliber would be a statement win at one of Michigan's most important positions.

The powerhouse already has 16 commits in the 2027 class and is ranked No. 11 nationally per Rivals. Furthermore, seven of those commits are considered blue-chip recruits, which might sway Torbert's decision.
