Michigan OL Outlook Shifts Under New Coaching Direction
Jim Harding is overhauling the Michigan offensive line as the program enters a new era under Kyle Whittingham. Harding’s arrival brings two decades of experience to Ann Arbor to stabilize a unit projected for a massive 2026 breakout.
“You got the best of the business coming in with Jim Harding, and he has all the b**** of Clay to really create a dominant offensive line over the next couple of years,” Jason Piacelli said in an episode of ROC Boys Football.
Harding is Michigan's Donald C. Graham Offensive Line Coach, who arrived in Michigan with 21 years of experience. In the last 17 years, he served as an offensive line coach and coordinator at the FBS level.
On May 6, redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Blake Frazier shared that Harding got to work as soon as he arrived at Ann Arbor.
“Oh, he's unbelievable. He has been just such a breath of fresh air,” Frazier said in an episode of the In The Trenches podcast. “I think he's done a really good job of understanding every individual's personality and kind of figuring out how to work with each of us.”
Harding fit well in the program with ease for two reasons. He acted as Utah’s offensive line coach for 12 seasons from 2014 to 2025. Moreover, he has already worked with Whittingham in those years.
While he has sent 13 offensive players to the NFL, like Garrett Bolles (20th overall, Denver Broncos), the highest-drafted OL in Utah’s history, his expertise is under test this season.
Michigan’s OL Projected To Improve The Offense In The 2026 Season
The Michigan Wolverines are under new leadership. Head coach Kyle Whittingham brought offensive line coach Jim Harding with him, whose half of the team is projected to elevate the program.
“...a bulk of Michigan’s offensive line is back and should be significantly improved. That, alone, should help the offense a ton in 2026,” SB Nation wrote on May 13.
Redshirt sophomore left tackle Blake Frazier appeared on the podcast In The Trenches and shared what has changed in the offensive line so far. Jake Guarnera, who, alongside Andrew Sprague, withdrew from the transfer portal, is moving to the center.
The roster also features Evan Link, Nathan Efobi, and Brady Norton, who are “battling for a starting spot.” Grace Foulk believes that this competition in the fall camp would result in “the five best guys on the field come September.”
Frazier also revealed that the OL is improving their communication.
“So just getting to the line, you know, making a call, making sure everybody's on the same page, because at the end of the day, you can correct stuff post snap.”
With such incoming changes in the OL, the Wolverines offense should be a sight to watch under Harding’s guidance. Are you excited for this season? Tell us in the comments.
