Michigan QB analyses past season’s shortcomings
Michigan Wolverines sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood enters with expectations higher than ever. After an up-and-down freshman campaign, he believes his biggest improvement ahead of 2026 won't show up in the weight room or on the stat sheet.
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Bryce Underwood reflected on the lessons he learned from his first year. He also discussed the work he has put in this offseason alongside quarterback trainer Jordan Palmer.
"I'd say being mentally stronger," Underwood said. "I feel like last year was more of like, OK, see if I'm physically gifted and now it's about seeing how mentally strong I can be throughout the season. No matter what, the goal is being 1-0 every single week."

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show on July 28, the sophomore explained that much of his offseason work has centered on simplifying the game rather than trying to do too much.
Training with Palmer has helped him slow everything down, remain calm in the pocket, and trust what he sees rather than rushing decisions.
"I wouldn't say so much of a problem, but some things I had to work on," Underwood said when asked whether he pressed too much during his freshman season.
He also credited repetition away from the practice field for helping him improve. Underwood said he constantly works on his footwork and movement, even around the house. He also tries to reinforce the techniques he's practicing every day.
The quarterback added that last season's coaching structure also presented challenges.
With Chip Lindsey serving as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Underwood felt there wasn't always enough one-on-one instruction at the position. He also acknowledged that he could have spent more time in the film room.
Kyle Whittingham has consistently supported Underwood throughout the offseason. In a recent episode, he made his stance clear, saying, "Bryce is our guy," while pointing to the sophomore's progress ahead of fall camp.
Underwood sets three goals for the 2026 season
Underwood said improving mentally remains a priority, but his focus goes beyond his own performance. The sophomore said helping Michigan win games matters more than any personal milestone.
"I'm team-first, so the national championship is the main goal," Underwood said in the same episode. "That's No. 1. No. 2 is being the best quarterback in the country. The other thing is being the best leader I can be for my team."
The sophomore also said becoming a more vocal leader has been a priority this offseason. He also looks to build trust with teammates.
Michigan opens the 2026 season against Western Michigan on September 5, giving Underwood his first opportunity to show whether the mental approach he developed this offseason translates into results on the field.
