Michigan Records Huge Recruiting Win by Hurting Kalen Deboer's Alabama

The Michigan Wolverines have clinched another win in their 2027 recruiting drive. Four-star tight end Colt Lumpris has flipped his commitment from Kalen Deboer's Alabama, their arch-rivals.

Lumpris, who is from Lawrenceville, Georgia, had been committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide since December 9, 2025. He, however, pledged to the Wolverines' new head coach, Kyle Whittingham, on May 23.

According to a report by Rivals, he is currently in Ann Arbor, visiting the program’s head coach and his staff. The tight end is the Wolverines’ 15th commitment.

“Just staying in contact with coach both Whitts and talking to them (was important),” Lumpris told 247Sports. “They continued to stick with the same thing they told me originally. They were men of their words.”

The Wolverines have gained a major offensive in Lumpris, who stands over 6-foot-6 and weighs 225 lbs. According to Hudson Standish of 247 Sports, who evaluated the scouting report, Lumpris possesses a “unique fluidity of movement for a player of his size.”

Moreover, he is young for his class and turns 17 in July.

Sports Illustrated reported that he finished as the 1-on-1 champion at JJets Flight School hosted on May 17 in Baltimore. It was hosted by NFL All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Lumpris

He is the latest addition to the program’s haul, which was ranked 11th nationally with a class score of 91.57. Lumpris had received offers from more than 15 programs, including Colorado, Ole Miss, Texas, and Penn State.

He has visited four programs, including Michigan. Lumpris is the No. 277 prospect in the Rivals300 regardless of position.

Why Lumpris Chose Michigan Over Alabama

Had Colt Lumpris remained committed to Alabama, Kalen Deboer’s program would have had two tight ends. The program is trailing behind with just six commits, as Lumpris shares why he picked the Michigan Wolverines.

“I've always been more into the hybrid type,” he said. “Just being able to run more routes as opposed to being a true in-line type of guy.”

The Wolverines had taken just one hybrid- type tight end in the 2026 cycle, Mason Bonner. This season, he would be under the strategies of Jason Beck, who is the offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach.

Apart from his playing style, Lumpris told Rivals that Michigan, which offers him prestige, “felt like home” for him, who is “huge into academics.”

With that, Michigan has ticked a lot of boxes from Lumpris’ list. His development in Ann Arbor will determine if he can live up to his four-star billing. What are your thoughts?
