Michigan snags 5-star kicker to help boost Kyle Whittingham's 2028 class

Michigan just got its first commitment in the 2028 class: a name worth knowing. Kicker Ryan Jung, ranked the top kicker in the country for his class by Kohl's Kicking, picked the Wolverines.

Jung stands six feet two and weighs 200 pounds. He spent last season at IMG Academy in Florida before moving to Milton, Georgia, for his 2026 high school season. He announced his commitment to Michigan on social media. UofM Coverage was first to break the news on X on June 21.

"BREAKING: 2028 kicker Ryan Jung has committed to Michigan," the account posted. "The 6-foot-2, 200-pound prospect from Bradenton, FL is the number one-ranked kicker in the country via Kohl's Kicking."

Per Ethan McDowell of On3, the driving force behind Jung's quick decision was Michigan special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs, whose intense technical evaluation and hands-on mentorship program deeply resonated with the young specialist during his camp visit

That ranking is not a small thing. Kohl's Kicking is the most respected evaluation service for specialists in college football, and being number one in a national class means programs across the country were watching Jung closely.

His tape backs up the ranking, too. Last season at IMG Academy, Jung connected on four of five field goal attempts with a long of 46 yards. He made 50 of 52 extra points and put 36 of his 66 kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks.

He showed out at the 2025 Kohl's Eastern Winter Showcase in Pittsburgh, too. Jung won the kickoff competition for underclassmen and scored a perfect 15 points in field goal charting. His longest kickoff that day went 68 yards with a hang time of 3.9 seconds.

Michigan had not secured a single 2028 commitment before this. Jung becomes the first player in that class for the Wolverines under Kyle Whittingham.

Michigan is building serious momentum in the 2028 cycle

Jung's commitment comes at a time when Michigan is starting to make real noise in the 2028 cycle. This week alone, the Wolverines hosted the number one running back, the number one defensive lineman, and a top 100 quarterback in the class.

Five-star 6'4", 245 lbs defensive lineman Tyzon Swann visited Ann Arbor and came away impressed.

"I knew I'd be wow'd by it, but I didn't expect to be so wow'd," Swann told Rivals after his visit.

That kind of reaction from a top prospect says a lot about where Michigan stands as a destination right now.

Whittingham has made clear that 2028 recruiting will be a major focus once the 2027 cycle wraps up. Getting Jung locked in early sets the tone for what could be a strong class.

Do you think Michigan can build on Jung's commitment and put together a top 2028 class? Let us know in the comments.
