Michigan Star Makes Bold Statement on Jason Beck’s Offense Ahead of New Season
Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck is overhauling the Wolverines' ground-and-pound identity. Tight end Zack Marshall revealed the team is pivoting toward a horizontal, 'empty-backfield' strategy.
The shift moves Michigan away from the heavy personnel sets favored during the Jim Harbaugh era to stretch defenses from sideline to sideline. TE Marshall recently shared his views on the matter with Jon Jansen on his In The Trenches podcast.
"Yeah, horizontal. Let's just, let's get the cat out of the bag. I think everyone knows this," said Marshall. "If you watch Jason Beck's offense, right, it's like it's all about horizontal spacing. And yes, we can beat you down the field; we can run the ball in the box, too."
He said the offense is designed to create quick opportunities on the outside through jet sweeps and perimeter screens that differ from traditional screen plays.

Beck is known for employing tactics that stretch defense from sideline to sideline. Beck uses crossing routes, jet sweeps, and quick perimeter passes to force defenders to cover the entire width of the field.
However, Beck’s system remains multi-dimensional. Michigan can still attack vertically and run inside.
Marshall added, "Everything's an R-P-O, everything has a second option, everything has a QB pull press. Having that versatility going horizontal is so different than anything we've had before."
Marshall highlights that nearly every play in Beck’s offense has a built‑in run‑pass option, giving the quarterback freedom. They can choose to hand off, keep, or throw depending on defensive alignment.
The shift suggests a more dynamic offensive approach. This is exactly why coaches are considering the Wolverines the favorites this year to win the Big Ten, according to Wolverines Wire.
Michigan Favorites To Win Conference, Per Coaches
Big Ten coaches shared their anonymous outlook with Athlon Sports. They ask Big Ten coaches who stay anonymous about other teams in the conference. And this season, what the rival coaches have to say about Michigan would give fans hope.
"I think they can win the conference. It’s not a group with a lot of household names, but there’s a lot of depth with really good players," said an anonymous coach to Athlon Sports.
This is a direct reflection of how Michigan will look to contend with the other teams with a balanced team. Other than Bryce Underwood, most of the players are lesser-known. Yet the team has good depth across positions, which makes them viable contenders.
"On offense, you’re gonna have Bryce (Underwood), Andrew Marsh, and Jaime Ffrench and JJ Buchanan out of the portal. There’s a lot of excitement for what that team can be this year," said another anonymous coach.
With JJ Buchanan, a veteran who brings depth and experience, Michigan certainly has a lot of talent. There's Underwood, the star QB and former No. 1 overall recruit. Four-star recruit Marsh and five-star recruit Ffrench are highly touted.
