Michigan urged to take urgent steps after losing out on recruit

Michigan Wolverines and Head coach Kyle Whittingham have already built one of the nation's strongest 2027 classes. As they missed out on a four-star quarterback, Lukas Prock, the focus is now on replacing key targets in the next cycle.

Chris Peterson of GBM Wolverine reported that Prock won't be heading to Ann Arbor. The 2028 prospect committed to the Indiana Hoosiers, leaving Michigan without one of its top quarterback targets in the class. Michigan is expected to shift its focus to other quarterback targets following Prock's decision.

In-state prospect Donald Tabron is a hot target, as pointed out by Peterson. However, he is already trending toward Texas A&M.

Peterson, in his report, sees potential for Michigan to land Tabron since the quarterback recruit took 15 unofficial trips to Ann Arbor since July 2023, with the latest being April 18th, 2026, per On3.

The Wolverines could soon intensify their pursuit of other highly regarded passers in the 2028 class. As per Peterson's report, another name to watch is Kamden Lopati, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound quarterback from Utah.

ESPN ranks Lopati as the top quarterback in the 2027 class, who has already pledged to the Wolverines in April after flipping his longtime commitment to Illinois. Yet Michigan will have to be careful, since he is keeping his options open and visited the U.S. Naval Academy in June.

Class of 2028 Texas quarterback Carter Zingelmann is another player already on Michigan's radar. The 6-foot-5, 227-pound passer received a Wolverines offer in the spring after throwing for more than 1,800 yards and rushing for over 700 last season.

North Carolina's Kaden Craft also remains in the mix after receiving his Michigan offer in May. Whether the Wolverines ramp up their efforts for those prospects could become one of the next storylines in their 2028 recruiting class.

Meanwhile, Michigan's quarterback board isn't the only area beginning to take shape. The coaching staff is also expanding its recruiting footprint.

Michigan and Kyle Whittingham expected to lean on national recruiting approach in 2028 cycle

According to a report by MLive.com, Whittingham and his staff have already begun laying the groundwork for the 2028 class after assembling the foundation of their 2027 group.

As reported by MLive, the Michigan Insider's Brice Marich said the new staff has embraced a broader recruiting strategy.

"The staff understands that they have a bigger reach and they're willing to go everywhere and tap into those resources and those connections," Marich said. "But at the same time, they also have trust in their development and their scouting and evaluations."

Michigan's recruiting efforts aren't limited to its home state, even though keeping top in-state talent remains a priority.

Five-star receiver Deandre Bidden and five-star offensive tackle Antijuan Wilkes are still high on the Wolverines' board, while Whittingham's ties to Utah continue to open doors in the state.

Marich also identified Craft and Zingelmann as two quarterbacks Michigan will continue to monitor in the 2028 class. He also expects the Wolverines to keep recruiting heavily in both Michigan and Utah.

Prock's commitment to Indiana closes one option, but Michigan's quarterback board remains active. With plenty of time left in the 2028 cycle, Whittingham and his staff will continue evaluating other targets.
