Michigan's 4-star commit likened to Super Bowl winning defensive back

The Michigan Wolverines would hit a jackpot if they secure Monsanna Torbert Jr. The four-star defensive back is being chased by 34 programs, a feat in itself, but his skills remind an expert of a former LSU and NFL great, which is no less than an honor.

“Might just be me, but #Michigan four-star DB commit Monsanna Torbert Jr. and his game kinda of reminds me of another do-it-all superstar... LSU great Tyrann Mathieu,” Brice Marich wrote on X. “Torbert is a player who can impact the game at a number of spots on the football field, just like Mathieu.”

This assessment came on July 7 as cornerback coach Jernaro Gilford seeks to get a commitment from the cornerback for Michigan. Torbert Jr. is a multi-sport athlete whose accolades include the Opening Finals and the Navy All-American Bowl.

He is the number 12 cornerback nationally per 247 Sports ranking and sixth in Ohio. His comparison with Tyrann Mathieu is not far-fetched. Between 2011-12 for LSU Fighting Tigers, Mathieu recorded 14 turnovers, 11 forced fumbles with eight recoveries and eight interceptions.

He was called the “Honey Badger” in his college days and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in his sophomore year. His 11 FF across 26 games set a school record. The Arizona Cardinals picked him 69th overall in 2013 but his most successful season came with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In 2020, he won his first and only Super Bowl title by defeating the San Francisco 49ers. In this pivotal faceoff, LSU’s honey badger made six total tackles out of which four were solo in the 31-20 game.

The comparisons between the two cornerbacks are not surprising. But does it also foresee what lies ahead in Torbert  Jr,’s future? The Ohio resident certainly has piqued more interest with this assessment on top of his raving scouting report.

Monsanna Torbert Jr. electrifies the field whenever he plays

In 2025, Monsanna Torbert Jr. led the Cincinnati Taft to an 11-1 record. In a ten- game regular season, he recorded 40 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3 pass break ups on defense.

“Projects as a potential multi-year contributor at the Power Four level. Could find a home at a variety of different spots, including field corner. Might also be worth a shot at wide receiver,” 247 Sports wrote about him in its evaluation.

Last year, he passed for 1,791 yards and scored 26 touchdowns while also rushing for 450 yards and recording 4 TDs. The Michigan Wolverines have 12 cornerback commits, but Torbert Jr. offers them skills on both primary and secondary.

Will he exceed expectations and win laurels like Tyrann Mathieu in his college and NFL career to come? What do you think?
