Nation's No. 1 CB Denied Eligibility for 2026 Season 5 Months After Transfer
John Meredith III’s college football career is embroiled in a controversial eligibility ruling. The No.1 Dallas area recruit has been deemed ineligible for transfer for athletic purposes.
In January, Meredith, a cornerback, had announced that he was transferring from Euless Trinity to North Crowley for athletic purposes. However, his move has been blocked by a 5-2 vote at an 11-6A District Executive Committee (DEC) meeting on June 11.
“It’s fine. It’s nothing too serious,” Meredith told Rivals. “We still have another appeal to go through, but it’s all in God’s hands. I’m not worried at all.”
Jerod Womack, Mansfield ISD executive director of athletics was at the meeting and confirmed the development. According to sources, Meredith can appeal the DEC ruling to the University Interscholastic League.
“But DEC results are hard to get overturned,” the Dallas Daily Morning News wrote on June 12.
The report also stated that this unfavorable ruling is a setback for North Crowley, which landed him in tough competition. Meredith had received 42 offers, including Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Miami, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Notre Dame, and Texas Tech.
“It’s a huge blow for North Crowley, which won the Class 6A Division I state title in 2024 and reached a regional final and finished 12-2 last season,” the Dallas Daily Morning News reported.
So, How Good Is John Meredith?
John Meredith, the 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds CB has been listed as the No. 1 cornerback recruit in the state according to the 247Sports rankings. He is the No. 2 overall player in the nation in the Class of 2027, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.
He was chosen for the Under Amoour All-American Game and was a first-team all-district selection as a junior. He played for the Euless Trinity team that lost an 8-3 to Mansfield Lake Ridge in the first round of the playoffs.
In March, in a conversation with Rivals, Meredith revealed that he had narrowed down his choices to six programs. They were Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M.
With this ruling, Meredith’s future is suspended in a limbo. Whether he appeals and it is rejected remains unknown. What are your thoughts? Tell us in the comments.
