No.1 OL Prospect Wastes Michigan's Recruiting Efforts & Joins SEC School
Kyle Whittingham and his staff have lost out on the No.1 offensive lineman of the 2027 recruitment class. Michigan wil now have to look elsewhere to build protection for their quarterback in 2027.
Five-star interior offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller has committed to the Florida Gators, On3's Hayes Fawcett reported. The elite prospect is the No. 1 IOL of the 2027 class, and the 4th-best talent in the country. This is a massive win for new head coach Jon Sumrall.
One of the main reasons Hiller chose Florida is offensive line coach, Phil Trautwein. When he was coaching at Penn State, Trautwein had begun recruiting the OL when he was still in middle school. That connection had the Nittany Lions pretty much set to land Hiller.
Then, 2025 came. Former PSU head coach James Franklin was fired, and most of the staff was changed, including Trautwein. His move to Florida drew Hiller to Gainesville.
“He's my guy," Hiller told ESPN. "That relationship right there is a huge part of why we got interested in Florida.” The five-star offensive lineman visited Florida in late January and ‘clicked right away” with Sumrall.
Michigan got into the mix early, extending him an offer in September 2024. Even though Michigan also went through a massive change in leadership this season, it couldn't generate enough interest for Maxwell Hiller. O-line coach Jim Harding still has to work on attracting top prospects to Michigan. To make matters worse, the Wolverines have already lost 2027 OL Tristan Dare.
And, it doesn't look like Whittingham and Co. will be able to hold on to another budding talent.
Michigan Predicted to Lose One More OL Commit
The Wolverines, as of now, have only two offensive linemen in their 2027 class. One is Sidney Rouleau, who is Harding's first Michigan commit. The other is three-star OL Louis Esposito, who is a legacy recruit for Michigan.
Losing him will be a big loss for the program. His father is former Michigan defensive line coach, Lou Esposito. Louis had committed back in 2024, completely sold on the idea of playing for the Wolverines. But his father took a job with the Baltimore Ravens, and rivak teams have jumped at this new opportunity.
Esposito took a visit to Notre Dame in April and was very impressed by the program. He was also interested in the Penn State and USC offers that came in March.
Will Michigan be able to save this pledge in their 2027 class? Let us know in the comments.
