No.1 WR Salesi Moa reveals real reason why he ditched Utah for Michigan
Salesi Moa signed with Utah back in December 2025 and was on campus within weeks. He never saw the field for the Utes once.
Moa is a four-star wide receiver out of Ogden, Utah. ESPN had him ranked as the No.1 player in the state and 38th overall in the 2026 class. But that perfect ranking didn't keep him in Utah for long enough.
"I was up at Utah, and some stuff went down over there," Moa said on the College Sports company per @champmediaco. "I was looking into different schools, and then my brother told me he was gonna go to Michigan, and the Utah coaching staff was going over there as well."
The "stuff" is no secret. Kyle Whittingham left Utah to become Michigan's head coach in December 2025. When he left, he took offensive coordinator Jason Beck and wide receivers coach Micah Simon with him. The entire staff Moa had committed to was suddenly in Ann Arbor.
"I just seen it as an opportunity because I really wanted to be at Michigan at first," he said in the same video. "So it was really just a huge opportunity to get back up at Michigan and play for the Big House."
While multiple top-tier programs viewed Moa's highest ceiling as a defensive back, his true passion lay at wide receiver. It was this desire that originally drove him to flip his commitment from Tennessee to Utah, where Kyle Whittingham's staff guaranteed him a prominent offensive role.
However, then Whittigham relocated to Ann Arbor and Moa entered the transfer portal with a Do Not Contact tag.
That almost always means the destination is already decided. He committed to Michigan days later and will now play receiver under Beck and Simon, the same coaches who built that relationship with him from the start.
As a senior at Fremont High School, Moa caught 63 passes for 1,272 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Moa had already visited Michigan before signing with Utah
Michigan was never fully out of the picture. Moa took an official visit to Ann Arbor in the summer of 2025 and returned for The Game in November, per Yardbarker.
Utah's staff made a late push and got him to flip from Tennessee and sign in December. Then Whittingham left, and everything flipped again.
"Michigan is a great fit for me, and it's where I feel God was leading me," Moa said, per Yahoo Sports. "Big Ten football is one of the biggest stages there is, and it doesn't get bigger than playing at the Big House."
