Norte Dame Star Linked With Michigan as 2027 Class Recruitment Continues

With a new head coach Kyle Whittingham, the Michigan Wolverines enter a new era in Ann Arbor. In this offseason, the focus is on the 2027 recruiting class. As they climb the recruiting ranks, a Notre Dame cornerback prospect is trending for Michigan.

The Michigan Wolverines have surged up the recruiting rankings, rising to No. 12 in Rivals’ team standings after being outside the top 20 not long ago. As Whittingham’s program now gains traction, several new prospects have emerged as priorities. One of them is the 2027 Riverside (Calif.) Notre Dame four-star cornerback Darius Johnson, as reported by Wolverines Wire.

Johnson holds offers from power programs like the Oregon Ducks, Oklahoma Sooners and UCLA among others. However, as reported by On3, Michigan holds the highest chance, 98.2% to land Johnson.

The 6-foot-1 and 155-pound Notre Dame product is ranked as the No.36 cornerback recruit and No.28 in California, as per On3. In late March, Johnson made an unofficial visit to the Michigan Wolverines staff, and it was widely viewed as a strong and productive trip for the cornerback.

“Thank you Michigan football! Had a great time and loved meeting the new staff!!” he wrote on X on March 29, after taking the trip to Ann Arbor. “Amazing group of coaches, looking forward to getting over there again! #goblue.”

On Sunday, several Rivals analysts, Adam Gorney, Greg Biggins, Brandon Huffman, and Ethan McDowell, collectively projected that Johnson could end up with the Whittingham's program.

They believed it to be so as Michigan possessing an edge in the recruitment race.

Factors Why Darius Johnson Might Choose Michigan

According to Gorney, both Michigan and UCLA currently hold a “slight edge” in the recruitment of Johnson. However, he noted Johnson’s strong ties with Michigan’s coaches.

"With Michigan, Johnson has known new position coach basically from the beginning of his recruitment and that carries a ton of weight,” he said.

Along with this, the timing might favor this recruitment race. The Wolverines are set to lose three starters after the 2026 season. The trio Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, and Smith Snowden will all graduate. The Michigan Wolverines are counting on Shamari Earls and freshman Jamarion Vincent to progress into starting roles next year.

While the new staff continues to prioritize developing talent, the Michigan Wolverines are expected to secure several cornerbacks in 2027, and Darius Johnson is viewed as a potential instant contributor if he commits to Michigan.

Johnson will take an official visit to Ann Arbor from June 19 to 21 during Victors Weekend.

Will he choose Michigan? Share your thoughts.
