Notre Dame DL recruited by Al-Golden forced to medically retire after surgery
Defensive lineman Brenan Vernon arrived at Notre Dame Fighting Irish as one of the most coveted defensive linemen in the country. Three years later, his football career is over.
Irish Sports Daily's Matt Freeman first broke the news on X on June 22 that Vernon had medically retired from football. It was later confirmed by On3's Blue and Gold publication. Then, defensive coordinator Al Golden spoke about what made Vernon so special when he signed with the Irish.
"He brings physical assets," Golden said back in December, per NBC Sports. "He's strong, he's tough, he's a competitor."
Vernon was a 6-foot-5, 260-pound four-star prospect from Mentor, Ohio, who turned down the Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Michigan Wolverines to come to South Bend. For Marcus Freeman, it was one of the best days of his recruiting tenure.
But things just never clicked in the field. Four games. Two tackles. Seventeen snaps across three years, per On3.
Spring 2025 is when it really fell apart. Vernon went in for MCL surgery in spring and never made it back onto the field that fall.
He did not see game action that fall. Instead, he moved over to the offensive line late in the season to help with depth where he could.
Vernon had two years of eligibility remaining before making the call to step away.
The Irish have now seen two defensive linemen medically retire this offseason, with Vernon following captain Donovan Hinish, who revealed on Dec. 29 that his playing career was over.
A coach-player relationship that held high potential came to a sudden stop with Vernon's retirement.
Vernon’s commitment helped spark one of Freeman’s best recruiting classes
Vernon's decision to choose Notre Dame over Ohio State was not expected. Multiple projections had him heading to Columbus. He committed ahead of his junior year in high school and never wavered.
"He has a great soul," Vernon told On3's Blue and Gold during his recruitment about Freeman back in 2022. "He's such a great guy in general, just like the rest of them. There's nothing else to say about Freeman other than he's just such a great person."
That loyalty said a lot. Vernon bought into what Freeman was building before anyone had proof it would work. Notre Dame went on to make back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances in 2024 and 2025. He just never got to be part of what it built on the field.
Notre Dame still has 20 scholarship defensive linemen on the roster despite Vernon's retirement.
