Paramount+ makes unexpected move to document Texas Tech’s most controversial offseason
The Texas Tech Red Raiders have spent months dominating college football headlines. Now, that unprecedented offseason is headed to the small screen.
According to the update on Texas Tech's official X account, Paramount+ is coming up with a four-episode docuseries following the Red Raiders through one of the most eventful off-seasons in the program's history. Production started in January, and the series is set to premiere before the college football season.
"This has proven to be a landscape-altering offseason and we've been lucky to have a front-row seat," Skydance Sports senior vice president Greg Groggel said. "This series will present fans and viewers with an unprecedented window into everything that is defining college football today."
Jane Wiseman, Paramount+'s executive vice president and head of originals, said the series will focus on the work that goes into building a championship-level football program.
"Texas Tech football has one of the most passionate fanbases in college sports, and this docuseries will give them an unprecedented look at what it takes to build an elite program," said Wiseman. "This series is exactly the kind of premium scripted and unscripted sports storytelling our subscribers love."
The Red Raiders captured their first-ever Big 12 title and earned their first trip to the College Football Playoff last season. Texas Tech's previous highest finish came in 2008, following an historic 11-2 campaign that culminated in an appearance in the 2009 Cotton Bowl against the Ole Miss Rebels football.
The athletic director Kirby Hocutt also welcomed the announcement, saying the documentary will showcase "the people, the passion, and the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines this program every day."
The announcement follows an offseason that turned Texas Tech into one of the biggest talking points in college football.
Texas Tech's dramatic offseason drew national attention
No storyline attracted more attention than quarterback Brendan Sorsby's gambling case.
After transferring from the Cincinnati Bearcats with a lucrative NIL deal, Sorsby was entering treatment for a g****** addiction before the NCAA ruled him ineligible after determining he had placed wagers while he was at Indiana.
He initially challenged the decision in court before dropping his lawsuit and declaring for the NFL Supplemental Draft. The NFL later announced it would not hold a supplemental draft.
The Red Raiders stayed in the spotlight because of their aggressive transfer portal strategy, too, involving Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire.
As per On3's 2027 Football Team Recruiting Rankings, the Red Raiders rank at No.8 with 17 recruits committed. That was only possible under the leadership of billionaire booster Cody Campbell.
With production in process, the series promises one of the most detailed behind-the-scenes looks yet at a Texas Tech team navigating expectations, controversy, and rapid change during the offseason.
What do you think of the docuseries? Let us know in the comments.
