Patrick Mahomes’ alma mater lands massive $75 million landmark revenue deal

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes' alma mater, Texas Tech, just gave its football stadium a brand new name. And the money behind it is unlike anything college football has seen from a naming rights deal in years.

Texas Tech Athletics announced a 15-year naming rights partnership, reportedly worth $75 million, with Galaxy on Friday, July 17. The home of Red Raider football will be called Galaxy Stadium, starting with the 2026 season.

"When I visit with alumni across the country, the conversation almost always turns to their favorite memories inside our stadium," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said, per Texas Tech Athletics. "This long-term partnership with Galaxy will have a lasting impact on Texas Tech Athletics."

Galaxy CEO and founder Mike Novogratz partnered with Texas Tech, citing the university's hardworking, loyal culture and intense, passionate fanbase. He pointed to Texas Tech as a place that builds real talent, the kind that lines up with what the company stands for.

"Texas Tech is exactly the kind of institution we want to be aligned with," Novogratz said, per the July 17 Texas Tech Athletics report. "It has a culture built on grit and loyalty, one of the strongest talent pipelines in the country and a fan base in Red Raider Nation that shows up with real intensity."

Galaxy is a global leader in data center infrastructure and digital assets. The company runs the Helios campus in Dickens County, about 60 miles east of Lubbock, with 1.6 gigawatts of approved capacity.

The deal makes Galaxy the official data center and digital assets partner of Texas Tech Athletics. Student-athletes also get NIL opportunities through branded campaigns. Galaxy's branding goes across football and both men's and women's basketball.

The stadium carried the Clifford B. Jones' name for nearly eight decades. The university said it will announce at a later date how it plans to continue honoring the Jones family.

Patrick Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP, played his college football right inside that building from 2014 to 2016 before the Chiefs drafted him 10th overall in 2017.

Texas Tech opens at Galaxy Stadium on September 5 against Abilene Christian.

The Red Raiders are still the team to beat in the Big 12 heading into 2026

Despite the Sorsby saga, Texas Tech won the Big 12 title last season and made the playoffs. Needless to say, the Red Raiders remain the favorites to repeat as conference champions.

USA Today predicted Texas Tech would win the Big 12 again in 2026. The Red Raiders placed nine players on the preseason All-Big 12 team, including six on defense alone, per Sports Illustrated.

Moreover, linebacker Ben Roberts was named preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year by USA Today.

ESPN's SP+ rankings had Texas Tech at No. 7 nationally in the spring, more than 10 spots above the next Big 12 program.

The stadium has a new name, but the expectations inside it have not changed.
