Paul Finebaum demands that 8-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick retire immediately
North Carolina head Coach Bill Belichick has eight Super Bowl rings under his belt, of which six were during his tenure as the New England Patriots' head coach. But NFL analyst Paul Finebaum thinks now is the time for the coach to walk away.
Right before North Carolina took the stage at the ACC Kickoff event Friday, ESPN's Get Up turned its attention to Belichick's future. Finebaum was asked one simple question: what's actually at stake for Bill Belichick this season?
"He [Belichick] won't get fired. But he should seriously consider retirement," Finebaum said on ESPN's Get Up on July 17. "He only took this job because he was bitter that he couldn't get an NFL job."
Finebaum is not predicting a termination. He's saying Belichick should walk away on his own terms instead. The analyst's take makes sense given his earlier observation that Belichick only took the job because NFL teams stopped calling.

"No one's taking away his six Super Bowls, but ending like he is going to end is really embarrassing and sad and in many ways pathetic, because this didn't have to happen," Finebaum added on ESPN's Get Up.
Finebaum pointed out that the move to college football came from frustration, not genuine interest in building something new. And the outside numbers haven't been kind either.
ESPN's preseason order of finish puts North Carolina 15th in the ACC, and CBS Sports rates Belichick's seat at a troubling 4.1 out of five.
"He chose the wrong place. He has tried to use the magic of yesteryear, and it simply hasn't worked. I'll break it to everyone who is curious how many games they're going to win this year. Their over and under in Vegas is 4.5. Five wins would be considered a success, and that would mean another embarrassment," Finebaum said on the same show.
Vegas Insider's odds did not help Belichick's situation either. A win total that low for a coach with six Super Bowl rings tells you exactly how little anyone expects from year two in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina’s roster is getting questioned just as much as the coach
Belichick isn't the only thing under scrutiny heading into 2026. An ACC Network analyst broke down the roster itself and came away with real doubts.
"I don't think I'm confident in that roster. I don't know if I'm confident with that they have retooled and rebuilt. I think they're still yearning for that... I think that roster is still a ways away," Eric Mac Lain said, per On3.
Mac Lain's comments point to a bigger issue here. This isn't just about Belichick anymore; it's about whether the guys on the field can compete in a conference this loaded.
Do you think Belichick can still turn things around in Chapel Hill, or should he opt for retirement? Let us know in the comments.
