Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day won a national championship in 2024. But before that happened, he had one of the most uncomfortable nights of his coaching career. A book has finally revealed just how bad it got.

Ohio State lost to the Michigan Wolverines for the fourth straight time in November 2024. Day walked into that locker room and tried to defend his game plan. That is when things got real.

"I forget who said it, but someone was like, 'You know, Coach Day, when you go on about stuff like this, I'm not going to lie, people hate you when you act like this," former Ohio State center Seth McLaughlin said in the Buckeye Brotherhood, as reported by Scarlet and Game in 2025.

Center Seth McLaughlin was injured and did not play that day. He was in the room, though, and he recounted what happened, via Bill Rabinowitz's book Buckeye Brotherhood, released in October 2025.

Michigan came in as a 20.5-point underdog and without their top players, cornerback Will Johnson and tight end Colston Loveland. Yet they handed the Buckeyes a 13-10 loss.

That same night, defensive lineman Mitchell Melton also took on Day directly. In other words, he was saying the team was caught in a self-defeating cycle of excuses and denial.

"What I wanted out of that meeting was to be very honest and open with ourselves and clear on what happened and why it happened, so that it would never happen again," Melton said in the same book.

The fallout from that loss went beyond the locker room. Day later revealed he received threats and his family was under fire for days before things settled down once the playoff wins started coming.

The locker room confrontation that night became the turning point nobody saw from the outside.

How Ryan day silenced every critic after that locker room moment

Ohio State went on a tear through the College Football Playoff. They beat the Tennessee Volunteers. They then defeated the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl and the Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl.

The Buckeyes’ last win came against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23 to lift the national championship. Day had the last word.

The same fans who chanted for Day's firing in November were watching him hoist a national title two months later.

Senior offensive lineman Donovan Jackson put it even more plainly.

"Seeing Coach Day hoist up that trophy after seeing all the flak he got," Jackson told USA Today. "It's just amazing as a player to see our coach in the position that we know he should be."

The locker room moment after the Michigan loss turned out to be the turning point. Day let himself be vulnerable. The players respected him more for it. And that trust carried them all the way to the Natty stage.
