Snubbed in Round 1, Kayden McDonald Sobs Uncontrollably Over Texans' NFL Draft Decision

Kayden McDonald's draft did not go as expected, but he finally found a team. In the 2026 draft, the Ohio State Buckeyes' defensive tackle's name was called in the second round of the NFL draft as the Houston Texans' 36th overall pick. When the wait was finally over, McDonald could no longer control his tears.

The Ohio State defensive tackle was widely projected to be a round one draft pick and was even invited to the green room. However, no team came in for him on April 24, the first day of the draft. The defensive tackle then accepted an invitation from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to return to the draft on Friday.

On the second day, the Texans selected the defensive tackle. As McDonald’s name was called, he stood up, and tears rolled down as all his emotions were let out. He then embraced everyone in the green room with him by giving them a hug and made it onto the stage to meet with Goodell.

"It's emotional, man," McDonald said during the moving moment. "I know I'm supposed to be here. I'm just so blessed. I'm just so emotional, like, where I came from. It's a blessing."

Coming from Suwanee, Georgia, the defensive tackle hails from a fairly balanced environment. It was not particularly challenging growing up, but it was not notably affluent either.

But that did not stop McDonald from achieving success in college. He earned Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year honors in 2025 and finished his standout season as an All-American.

McDonald hit a career-high eight tackles in three high-profile matchups- Texas, Penn State, and Miami. According to Pro Football Focus, McDonald was the highest-graded run defender in college football last season, with a 91.8 grade.

His ability to hold down the interior makes him a key piece of the defense. McDonald's presence should create more favorable one-on-one situations for outside pass rushers.

“Disruptive, making it easier for the (defensive) end,” McDonald is already confident. “We all go to work.”

He will be joining a unit that includes All-Pro talent in Derek Stingley Jr., Will Anderson Jr., along with the Pro Bowlers like Azeez Al-Shaair, Calen Bullock, among others.

Houston Texans Get a Missing Piece of the Puzzle in Kayden McDonald

DeMeco Ryan’s unit was the No. 1 defense in the 2025 season, and they have just added one of the best players in his position for 2026. He will join a Texans unit that gave up just 17.3 points per game, the second-best in the league. They led the way in fewest yards allowed at 279 per game in 2025.

The Athletic's Derrick Klassen believes that McDonald will be able to fill the gap, as the Texans lacked a dominant interior presence against the run last season.

“If he's [McDonald] as good as I believe that he can be, even as a rookie, this might be one of the best defenses you've ever seen because they were already kind of that last year before they could defend the run like this with a nose like that,” the analyst said.

The Houston Texans finished in the top 10 in every defensive statistic except for the red zone defense. They finished 16th.

Now, to this equation, Houston adds Kayden McDonald. Will he be able to fix the glaring issue? Share your thoughts.
