Steve Sarkisian Mocks Texas Tech With Patrick Mahomes Taunt Amid Controversy

Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has been taking shots at in-state rivals, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, all offseason. He went after their schedule in May. Then the Brendan Sorsby injunction dropped, and he found another opening.

Sarkisian was wrapping up an appearance on Up and Adams with Kay Adams on Monday, June 15. He pulled Patrick Mahomes right into the conversation.

"The way these injunctions are going, Pat Mahomes might be playing quarterback for Texas Tech again before Joey's done," Sarkisian said.

Mahomes played three seasons at Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016 before the Kansas City Chiefs drafted him 10th overall in 2017. The idea of his returning to Lubbock under a court injunction is obviously absurd.

The joke cleverly plays on the idea that if a court could allow a banned player back into the game, then it raises the question of why someone who left college football for the NFL nearly a decade ago couldn't make a comeback.

Sarkisian joked that Joey McGuire, who is entering his fourth season in the Tech Raiders camp, might see Mahomes playing before taking a head coaching role somewhere else.

Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction on June 8 by a Lubbock judge, clearing him to play in 2026 despite the NCAA banning him. He placed over 9,000 bets totaling around $90,000 while in the Indiana Hoosiers.

Sarkisian also walked back his earlier comments about Texas Tech's schedule. He said his issue was with scheduling inequalities across college football, not with the program itself.

How the Brendan Sorsby Saga Ended Overnight

Sorsby and Texas Tech mutually parted ways on Monday, June 15. He is entering the NFL Supplemental Draft, with the deadline to apply set for June 22.

Texas Tech board chairman Cody Campbell confirmed the news, saying the supplemental draft is “the only viable and fair path” for Sorsby moving forward, per USA Today.

Just hours before the Big 12 filed a lawsuit against one of its own member schools. Georgia and Nebraska had already rejected dates with Texas Tech. The pressure was too much.

The supplemental draft does not come up often. It is basically a last resort for players who lose their eligibility after the regular draft window has already closed.

As it happened, the pressure pushed a solution before the legal system could even have its say.
