Successful Relationship: Lane Kiffin Justifies Ugly Ole Miss Exit After Cutting Ties
It's been exactly six months since Lane Kiffin walked out of Oxford, Mississippi. The former coach has now taken up the coaching mantle at LSU, but he has reasons behind this decision.
During an interview with the media, Kiffin addressed about settling into his new role at LSU. He also discussed his six-year stint with the Ole Miss Rebels.
"I look at it like six years that gave me a lot, gave the players a lot, we gave them a lot. And so you look at it like a really, really successful relationship," Kiffin said.

Kiffin's relationship with the Rebels was indeed productive. During his time with the Rebels, he had a 55–19 record, multiple 10+ win seasons, and consistent top‑25 finishes.
He elevated the Rebels into SEC contention. He won the Outback Bowl (2020), Peach Bowl (2023), and Gator Bowl (2024). Despite the success, he chose to part ways with the organization. However, Kiffin describes it as a natural progression.
"I don’t expect everybody to understand or agree, and that’s OK. It’s my life that I can’t live for fans and other people. I gotta make decisions and go with it," Kiffin said.
Kiffin signed a $91 million deal with LSU right after the Rebels finished their season 11-1. He also wanted to coach in the CFP, but Ole Miss denied that request.
In spite of parting ways with the Rebels, controversies related to his former employers still trail him, as his rather 'inflammatory' remarks were directed at Ole Miss.
Former Rebels DT Blasts Kiffin
Lane Kiffin's recent interview with Vanity Fair cut deep with a former Ole Miss alumnus. Kiffin had recently made quite a subtle dig at the Rebels' locker room and drew the ire of Jerrell Powe.
However, Powe recently took to X to share his feelings.
"Lane had no problem selling Oxford to black athletes while stacking classes & winning games, and cashing a $90M contract off our backs. Now Mississippi “too racist”?" Powe said.
Powe's remark was a direct reply to the allegations levelled against the Rebels. Kiffin had made those remarks due to the history of racism at Mississippi, many parents did not feel comfortable with their wards joining the Rebels.
"Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi. That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world," Kiffin had blatantly stated.
However, Kiffin clarified that they're "not shots" directed towards the college. In an interview with ON3, he stated he did not have malice in his heart toward Ole Miss.
However, how the college chooses to interpret it is not clear.
LSU Tigers are scheduled to take on Ole Miss on September 26th this year in a SEC opening game. That would mean Kiffin would return to his former home after a nine-month absence.
