Texas Tech “Deserves More Hate”: Analyst Lashes Out Over Brendan Sorsby Fiasco
On June 8, a Texas judge issued a temporary injunction in favor of Brendan Sorsby, who is now eligible to play football. The Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback is under investigation for serious NCAA rules violations. This outcome has upset many and drawn out a strong reaction from experts.
In a strongly worded article titled “Texas Tech deserves more hate in Brendan Sorsby's sordid eligibility case,” senior writer Dan Wolken penned the frustration and disbelief many are feeling over this ruling.
“Texas Tech could choose to do the right thing and tell its starting quarterback his services are no longer needed,” Wolken opined on June 10.
Sorsby, 22, is being investigated for g******* and placing b*** on various teams, including the one he was a part of, the Indiana Hoosiers. He countered the NCAA by filing a lawsuit against them.
In his affidavit, Sorsby admitted to “placing small b*** on the Indiana football team, typically in amounts between $5 and $50” in 2022. He stated that his reason for indulging in these activities was that he was a freshman with “no reasonable chance” to play.
Sorsby said that he wanted to get closer to teammates. He called the NCAA’s stance on his activities “deeply hypocritical,” and a “wholesale abandonment of its obligations and duties to promote the well-being.”
According to sources, Judge Ken Curry ruled that prohibiting Sorsby from resuming his football activities would cause him to “suffer probable, imminent, and irreparable injury.”
Wolken called this a “nonsensical injunction” in his article. He has taken deep offense to the program’s decision-makers for allowing this debacle to get to this point.
Dan Wolken Calls Out Texas Tech’s Cody Campbell And Kirby Hocutt
In his article for Yahoo Sports, writer Dan Wolken weighed in on the kind of reaction Texas Tech should be facing for allowing a Brendan Sorsby’s fiasco to escalate and set a concerning precedent.
“But why is it too much to ask the adults at Texas Tech — starting with mega-booster Cody Campbell and his underlings in the chancellor and athletic director offices — to just s*** it up and do the right thing here?” he wrote on June 10.
This week, according to On3, Cody Campbell, the former Texas Tech quarterback, stated that he is “doing everything I can to fix it.”
Wolken also named Texas Tech’s athletic director (AD) Kirby Hocutt, who, following the backlash, issued the following statement.
“As we have said before, we do not believe that the circumstances of Brendan’s case warranted permanent ineligibility,” Hocutt said per ALO reports. “As he returns to our football program, we remain committed to supporting Brendan’s recovery and ensuring his compliance with the court’s order.”
Various ADs like Gene Taylor, Josh Brooks and ACC commissioner Jim Phillips have voiced strong disagreement over QB Brendan Sorsby’s reinstatement and are against playing with Texas Tech. It is up to the program to make an important decision in this landmark decision.
