30 Years Later, Notre Dame on Track to Repeat Lou Holtz’s Iconic NFL Draft Achievement
NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler believes Notre Dame has a realistic chance to produce 10 selections in the 2027 NFL Draft, a feat the program hasn't accomplished since the Lou Holtz era.
"You need to go back more than 30 years to the Lou Holtz era, the last time Notre Dame produced ten draft picks in a single class," Brugler wrote. "There is at least a decent chance the Irish could reach that mark in 2027."
If Notre Dame reaches that milestone, it would match a benchmark the program hasn't achieved since one of the most successful periods in its modern history under Holtz.
"Leonard Moore should finish with one of the highest grades I've ever given a cornerback," Brugler wrote in the same piece. "He is a slam-dunk top-ten pick."

Moore alone could be a top-ten pick. But he is far from the only name on Brugler's Notre Dame list.
Safety Tae Johnson looks like an early-round pick. Defensive backs DJ McKinney, Christian Gray, and Luke Talich also carry NFL-level grades in Brugler's early evaluations.
Among the seniors, wide receiver Jordan Faison and linebackers Drayk Bowen and Jaylen Sneed all have preliminary draftable grades from NFL teams.
Then there are the underclassmen. Quarterback C. J. Carr will be a draft pick whenever he enters the process. Edge rushers Boubacar Traore and Bryce Young have the talent to push into the top fifty. Linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is another name Brugler mentioned as someone who should keep rising.
"This program will be well-represented in the NFL Draft over the next few years," Brugler wrote in the same piece.
Holtz coached Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996, leading the Irish to the 1988 national championship while overseeing the program's last 10-player NFL Draft class.
Ten picks from one class. Think about what that says about the talent Freeman has stacked in South Bend.
Notre Dame Has More All-Time NFL Draft Picks Than Any Program in History
To understand why that number matters so much, you have to know where Notre Dame stands historically.
544 players have been drafted out of South Bend. Nobody in college football has sent more to the NFL, according to the Fighting Irish athletics.
Lou Holtz produced 12 first-round picks across his entire time at Notre Dame. Only legendary coach Ara Parseghian matched that number.
"Notre Dame is on the most solid footing it's been on since the heyday of Lou Holtz," per Yardbarker. "The talent and depth have improved, and Freeman is finding NFL traits in high school players and developing them quickly."
Ten picks in 2027 would put Freeman in a conversation most Notre Dame coaches never got close to.
