This kid was something special: Bo Schembechler’s Classic Take on Jim Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh’s current vision for the Los Angeles Chargers traces back to a defining recruitment by Legendary coach Bo Schembechler in 1982. The two formed a lasting bond during their time in Ann Arbor.
Trevor Woods of Maize N Brew recently found the 1989 autobiography of Schembechler, "Bo." Within it, a quote stood out from Schembechler praising Harbaugh.
"If you only saw that pass alone, you would know this kid was something special."
Schembechler was looking back at a play against the Ohio State Buckeyes game when Harbaugh took a big hit from a blitzing defender.
But still managed to connect with John Kolesar on a 77-yard touchdown that helped the Michigan Wolverines seal a 27-17 win.

In a chapter titled "Quarterbacks," Schembechler details the essential traits of the position. He wrote, “Quarterbacks are a special breed. They need to be c****.”
Schembechler was talking about the mindset he believed quarterbacks need to have, especially a certain level of swagger and self-belief in pressure situations.
Another moment from the book revisits Harbaugh telling Schembechler that they were going to beat the Ohio State Buckeyes football in 1986. Bo asked Harbaugh if he really believed that, and after Harbaugh said yes,
Schembechler responded, “Well... you better be right.” Michigan eventually won 26-24, with Harbaugh throwing for 261 yards while completing 19 of 29 passes.
Currently, Harbaugh is the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers and guided the Wolverines from 2015 to 2023. He won back-to-back Big Ten East Division Championships and the Big Ten Championship from 2021 to 2023. They eventually became National Champions in 2023 as well.
The Chargers Draft Showed Exactly What Harbaugh Wants
Schembechler recognized Harbaugh’s ability to define and execute a specific, winning brand of football. And that can clearly be seen from the way he continues to build the Los Angeles Chargers.
The team has added two new coordinators, Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator and Chris O'Leary as defensive coordinator. But their draft strategy showed a lot more about the mentality of Jim Harbaugh, according to Thomas Martinez of the Chargers on SI.
Defensively, the Chargers kept developing physical run-stoppers, like defensive tackles Akheem Mesidor and Nick Barrett. Creating a scheme to stop the run at the point of attack and give their linebackers a chance to work on it.
On offense, the Chargers developed more speed in players such as Keaton Mitchell and Brenen Thompson while continuing to build a roster around QB Justin Herbert.
