Three Reasons Why Michigan Fans Should Be Excited About Four-Star Jayce Brewer
The Wolverines just secured a foundational piece for their 2027 defensive front. Four-star edge rusher Jayce Brewer chose Michigan over 30 programs on Saturday. His commitment propels Michigan into the top 30 of the national recruiting rankings.
According to Ryan Zuke of MLive, Brewer became the seventh commit in the class and the second player to join this month. Five of Michigan’s seven commits are now rated as four-star prospects, and the class moved up to No. 30 nationally after his pledge.
One of the biggest reasons for excitement is the level of competition Michigan beat out during Brewer’s recruitment. He held offers from the Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Texas A&M Aggies, among others.
Another reason fans should be excited is Brewer’s physical profile and overall upside as an edge rusher. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound defender is ranked No. 342 overall and No. 28 at his position by 247Sports. His combination of size and athleticism fits the kind of edge players Michigan develops.

Brewer’s addition also gives Michigan another talented piece alongside four-star edge commit Recarder Kitchen. Analyst Greg Smith praised Brewer’s explosiveness and long-term potential, noting that his best football is still ahead of him.
National Recruiting Analyst Believes Brewer fits Michigan
Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith pointed to Brewer’s size, explosiveness, and long-term upside as reasons why the Wolverines should feel good about it.
“He’s a really good football player,” Smith said. “He’s exactly the type of player that it feels like Michigan always has. They get these guys that are about his size that are really good players off of the edge that can get after the passer.”
Smith also believes Brewer still has plenty of room to develop physically while keeping the athletic traits that make him effective as a pass rusher.
“I think he is a kid that will be able to continue to bulk up and still keep a lot of that explosiveness to then help them also be able to stop the run,” Smith said. “I think he’s a really good player with a lot of upside, and his best football playing days are ahead of him.”
Brewer now joins four-star edge prospect Recarder Kitchen in Michigan’s 2027 class. Smith also praised the work Michigan’s new coaching staff has done on the recruiting trail under head coach Kyle Whittingham.
“They hit the ground running,” Smith said. “I think they’re going to have a really hot summer.”
