Tom Brady reveals the defense that gave him the most trouble on-field
Tom Brady’s capabilities as a quarterback remain the standard to beat. But even the strongest have a chink in their armor. After playing and defeating every secondary in his illustrious career, Brady revealed which defense kept him on his toes.
“I think those early Miami defenses: 2000 to about 2005,” Brady said. “They lined up in the same front, same coverages, and I think the worst games in my career were against the Dolphins. Like 79 yards passing, 115 yards passing.”
In 2021, the 48-year-old made a guest appearance on Monday Night Football broadcast by ESPN. There, he admitted that he had the most trouble with the defense in the early years of his pro career. He revealed this to a set of iconic quarterbacks.
“We couldn't complete passes. It was embarrassing. And they didn't do anything different,” he told Eli and Payton Manning.
After seven Super Bowl titles and a 20-year-long dynasty with the New England Patriots, it is difficult to imagine Brady as a player who struggles on the field. However, he was up against some of the best players.
The Miami Dolphins squad to pressure him featured a pair of All-Pros in pass rusher Jason Taylor and linebacker Zach Thomas. Their secondary was led by Patrick Surtain, Sam Madison, Arturo Freeman and Brock Marion. While Brady wasn’t exactly correct about his stats, his memory of them is pretty accurate.
He threw for only 76 yards in a 2004 game that the Patriots won against the Dolphins. Between 2001 and 2005, Brady played in only three of nine games against Miami. He recorded fewer than 110 yards in those face-offs.
Overall, Brady held a 55.4% completion rate with a passer rating of 76.6. He recorded 164 yards per game, threw 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Patriots managed to go 6-3 in those nine games, but the Dolphins’ formidable defense left a mark on Brady.
Despite losing two Super Bowl campaigns to the New York Giants, Brady named the Dolphins’ defense as the toughest to deal with. Yet, he triumphed and had a career with a lasting legacy. But how did he manage to do it?
Former teammate reveals the secret behind Tom Brady’s NFL success
Recently, Josh Gordon revealed Tom Brady’s offseason regimen to celebrity Twitch streamer N3on. He shared the details of Brady’s discipline over his health and how his teammates were roped into it.
“He made us live with him in the offseason. Like train right there, his wife making us food and everything like that. It’d be me, [Julian] Edelman, and [Rob Gronkowski],” Josh Gordon said on June 30.
The wide receiver nicknamed “Falsh” was Brady’s teammate between 2018 and 2019. Gordon’s off-field controversies were starting to overshadow his on-field talent. That is when Brady intervened and took him under his wing.
“We would just do the most crazy routine of like standing in one spot and at least 50 times you just catching one specific pass… Meanwhile, your hands are just f****** taking a beating… That’s about the craziest s***... He’s obsessive, bro,” he revealed in his car ride with N3on.
