“Too hard”: LSU's $40M roster overhaul receives brutal reality check over playoff hopes
Lane Kiffin’s first-season success with the LSU Fighting Tigers depends on how he manages the time crunch against him. After his controversial and abrupt exit from Ole Miss, Kiffin has much to prove to an expert who is unconvinced that his $40 million roster can win the national championship.
“I think it's just going to be too hard, Cole,” Justin Williams of The Athletic told Cole Cubelic, the guest host of The Paul Finebaum Show. “I realize Lane Kiffin had a ton of success at Ole Miss, and he kind of had a similar blueprint, where he kind of raided the portal year in and year out.”
Williams, a senior writer, made his comments as LSU has reportedly invested over $40 million in its roster, making it the most expensive one this season.

“Multiple general managers believe that LSU has the highest payroll in the sport entering the 2026 season, exceeding $40 million,” On3’s Pete Nakso reported.
Kiffin secured over 40 players from the transfer portal and made it a top-ranked class according to 247 Sports. Notable additions include edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, quarterback Sam Leavitt and offensive tackle Jordan Seaton.
However, the new wave of talent in LSU does not guarantee awards and accolades per Williams. He believes Kiffin and Co. are rushing against time.
“And that's not to say LSU won't get there, but can you turn that over in a single offseason with a re-tooled offensive line, a completely new receiving core, a quarterback that was not a full participant in spring?” he asked on the podcast shared by ESPN College Football on July 18 on YouTube.
Leavitt missed spring practice and is yet to familiarize himself with offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.'s approach.
Kiffin left the Ole Miss Rebels on November 30 last year after the program concluded an 11-1 regular season. He signed a hefty $91 million, seven-year contract and joined LSU, Ole Miss’ arch-rival.
He arrived in Baton Rouge with huge expectations on his shoulders for his Fighting Tigers debut. Williams believes Kiffin needs more than an offseason to prove his roster was worth what it cost LSU.
Lane Kiffin vowed he will turn the national championship dream into a reality
LSU hired Lane Kiffin as the successor to Brian Kelly, who was let go after a 7-6 season in 2025. The program cut ties with him after a $54 million buyout.
Kiffin got to work immediately and roped in the necessary players; his agenda: win.
“I don't know how fast it's going to happen, but we're going to win a national championship,” said Kiffin in an episode of In The Bayou.
LSU last won the national title in 2019 and has not made a College Football Playoff appearance since. The expectation in Baton Rouge is that the team brings home the laurels.
Anything else would be a poor return on a big investment.
