“Trash bin”: Fans horrified over Michigan’s new big house turf

As the turf-versus-grass debate continues to divide the football world, Michigan's iconic 'The Big House' unveiled its brand-new green turf. But instead of applause, the makeover sparked an immediate wave of criticism from fans.

On July 22, Michigan Football's X account proudly unveiled the Big House's new turf with a series of photos. But the timing backfired. As the football world remains split over the turf-versus-grass debate, fans weren't exactly thrilled by the new look.

“That’s the biggest trash bin I think I’ve ever seen,” wrote a fan on Michigan Football's X post, as he criticised the turf's new look.

After the FIFA World Cup, many stadiums that had installed natural grass removed it and switched back to artificial turf.

The move has raised concerns not only among the NFLPA but also among fans, as evident from the X post, who believe NFL players deserve to compete in a safer environment.

Several studies have shown that natural grass is much safer than artificial turf, as they put less strain on athletes' knees, joints, and backs.

However, despite that, many programs don't use natural grass due to its high maintenance costs and harsh winter conditions.

Interestingly, Michigan Stadium had a history of using grass before the turf.

The stadium used Kentucky bluegrass from 1927 to 1968 before switching to 3M Tartan Turf in 1969.

However, concerns over player safety and field conditions led to a return to natural grass from 1991 to 2002 despite persistent drainage and sunlight issues.

In 2003, the stadium adopted FieldTurf, and since then, they have been using the same turf.

However, Michigan is not the only program to use artificial turf, as nearly two-thirds of college football programs play on turf, while the remaining one-third play on natural grass.

Even so, when Michigan unveiled its new turf this July, fans offered little praise for it.

Michigan football under fire as fans slam new turf

The very same comment section was flooded with suggestions and criticism from fans, who argued that despite the Michigan Wolverines being valued at $1.463 billion, they still haven't made the necessary changes to their football field.

“Tragic that one of the wealthiest college football programs in the country, with maybe the most recognizable stadium in the country, chooses not to make the investment of a natural grass field in the year 2026,” said a fan.

Another fan was quick to reignite the grass-versus-turf debate, explaining why natural grass remains the better option.

“Why can you just have grass? Less injury and natural,” questioned a fan.

One fan doubled down on the grass debate, saying:

“Should’ve laid grass for the safety of our athletes.”

The Barstool Ohio State X handle took it a step further, saying the turf looked bad.

“Looks like s***.”

"Go back to real grass. This turf looks like a** and players want grass. You'd get better recruits with a grass surface," said another disgruntled fan.

Given that, what are your thoughts on the new look of the stadium?
