Urban Meyer: Brendan Sorsby's NCAA Violations Destroyed the ‘Sanctuary’ of Texas Tech's Locker Room
Even after his exit, college football is reeling from the dent Brendan Sorsby has made. The quarterback started a discussion on violations of the NCAA’s guidelines on g******* in student-athletes, and Urban Meyer explained how manipulative that situation was.
“Inside that locker room…there’s only a small swath of people that actually know what’s going on,” Meyer said on the Triple Opinion podcast. “When you determine who’s going to win and lose, the number one thing is always the health of your team. Who’s hurt and only you know…and that’s your sanctuary. And the sanctuary is broken if now someone’s using that information to go g*****.”
The former head coach was in conversation with Mark Ingram II and Rob Stone on June 17. He stated the implications of this incident are heavy.
Sorsby, 22, was ruled ineligible to play football by the NCAA, which was investigating him for placing b*** on an array of teams, including his team, the Indiana Hoosiers, in 2022. He countered the NCAA with a lawsuit.
While Meyer explained how Sorsby’s actions infringed on the locker room’s sanctity, Sorsby underlined locker room dynamics as his reasons.
“My bets were purely intended to make me feel more connected to the game and my teammates and to give me more of a reason to root for my teammates,” his affidavit read.
The quarterback sought a temporary injunction to resume his football activities and was granted the same earlier this month. He pleaded based on the extent of his involvement on the roster.
“With several quarterbacks ahead of me on the team’s depth chart, there was no reasonable chance that I would play,” he said, citing his true freshman status in 2022.
Sorsby has exited college football following the strong and growing criticism. Athletic directors across conferences even threatened to boycott Texas Tech. However, one person praised the program and called out another over this fiasco.
Brendan Sorsby’s Agent Holds Cincinnati Bearcats Accountable For Inaction
Amidst raging reactions against QB Brendan Sorsby for g******* and placing b*** and Texas Tech for escalating the situation, his agent spoke up. Ron Slavin called out the Cincinnati Bearcats for not intervening despite knowing Sorsby’s activities.
“If anybody should be questioned or catching heat, it should be Cincinnati,” Slavin said via 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on June 17. “Because they knew for two years and never said anything or didn’t do anything about it. That’s the part of the story that gets lost.”
In four years, Sorsby had wagered around $90,000 on several teams across sports. He played for the Bearcats from 2024 to 2025. The program stated that they would have reported Sorsby immediately. Since then, he has declared for the NFL Supplemental Draft.
Meyer’s take and Sorsby’s affidavit open a conversation on belonging and camaraderie within the locker room. Will the NCAA probe into why Sorsby did what he did, affecting college football forever? What are your thoughts?
