Urban Meyer Issues Warning to Arch Manning & Texas After Brendan Sorsby Ruling
The Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders’ rivalry continues to unfold while a landmark ruling reverberates across college football. After recent events, former head coach Urban Meyer has warned the Longhorns from engaging with the Red Raiders.
“Texas needs to worry about one thing. They don’t need to start hyping up a billionaire. And we love McGuire because he's a street fighter,” he said on The Triple Option podcast. “And he knows that there’s only one team that would advantage to Texas, Texas. Stay away from that one man.”
The historic in-state rivalry between these two programs took a new turn after Texas Tech received the backing of its former player and billionaire Cody Campbell. He has been a member of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents since April 2021.
“The Red Raiders seem to have renewed belief in their abilities as a program and are happy to engage with their neighbors for more notoriety,” College Sports Networks wrote.
This episode in their rivalry unfolded in May, as star quarterback Arch Manning enters his second year with the Longhorns. His head coach Steve Sarkisian made a pointed comment about the Red Raiders.
“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year,” he told Andy Staples in a May 22 X post.
In response to these comments, Campbell challenged the Longhorns on X.
“Schedule us then. We’ve been talking about it for years, and we are more than willing,” he posted.
However, with Brendan Sorsby touted to play despite the disagreement floating around him, these two programs might not face off so easily.
Red Raiders Take Heat Over QB Brendan Sorsby’s Recent Ruling
Cody Campbell’s response to the recent ruling over Brendan Sorsby has not sat well with many, including Meyers. The Red Raiders’ quarterback is under investigation for serious NCAA rules violations involving g******* and placing b***.
Earlier this week, he was granted an injunction to resume his football activities, resulting in significant backlash.
“This unfortunate situation is the outcome of a broken system,” Campbell told On3. “I’m doing everything I can to fix it, but until there is a permanent solution, Texas Tech and its student athletes have to do the best they can to navigate and compete amid the chaos that exists in the reality of the world we live in.”
Before Meyer, some Power 4 athletic directors revealed their plans to boycott Texas Tech altogether. One AD even called the issue “disgusting.” In his strongly worded critique, senior writer Dan Wolven called out Campbell for allowing Sorsby to stay.
“But why is it too much to ask the adults at Texas Tech — starting with mega-booster Cody Campbell and his underlings in the chancellor and athletic director offices — to just s*** it up and do the right thing here?” he wrote on June 10.
College football is standing at an unprecedented crossroads and is widely against Texas Tech. Many prominent voices are calling to disengage with the program, but will it affect them? What are your thoughts?
