Urban Meyer keeps Bryce Underwood's concern a secret in bold claim

Urban Meyer has coached Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller, and Cardale Jones. When he talks about what a quarterback is supposed to look like, people listen.

Meyer appeared on the July 10th episode of The Triple Option podcast and made a bold claim about Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood.

"I've had a lot of conversations with Coach Whitt [Kyle Whittingham] about him," Meyer said. "I'm not going to share some of them because that's between two good friends. There are some concerns, but there's also, if God said, 'I'm going to go make me a quarterback,' it's going to look a lot like Bryce Underwood as far as size, athleticism. He's a great kid. He worked at it."

The bold claim about God's blueprint is built on what Underwood actually looks like. He is 6-feet-4, with elite arm strength and dual-threat speed.

Meyer spent decades recruiting and coaching quarterbacks, and he's saying Underwood checks every physical box a quarterback could check.

But Meyer was honest that the talent alone was not enough last year.

"Are there some things missing? Sure," Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast. "He got thrust into a really tough situation. Someday they're going to look back at that situation and go, 'What in the hell was happening there?'"

He's pointing directly at the structural failure of Underwood's freshman year. Michigan invested millions in him, but never gave him a dedicated quarterback coach. Sherrone Moore left him essentially on his own in the middle of a Big Ten schedule.

Meyer made the importance of that coach-quarterback bond very clear.

"You turn, and you bump into each other because that's how close a quarterback coach has to be with a young quarterback. It's non-stop training that position. Non-stop," he said in the same podcast.

Underwood possesses the ideal physical traits and raw potential to succeed if properly developed, as believed by another coach.

Michigan’s quarterback coach Koy Detmer Jr. calls Bryce Underwood “super super driven”

The dedicated position coach Meyer said was missing is now in place. Whittingham brought Koy Detmer Jr. from Utah specifically to work with Underwood full-time in 2026.

Detmer has already been vocal about what he sees.

"He wants to be such a good player, and he works his tail off to do so, both in the film study and then in the weight room," Detmer said on In The Trenches Podcast. "The kid is super, super driven."

Whittingham said the same thing after the spring game, just with more detail.

"He progressed all through spring, and some things may not have been noticeable to the general populace. His footwork, pocket presence, he's improved in all areas," Whittingham said at his post-game press conference, per Fox Sports.

The setup around Underwood this year looks nothing like what he had in 2025. He has a dedicated quarterback coach now. Jason Beck is calling plays. And a head coach who has spent two decades figuring out how to get the best out of quarterbacks.

Do you think Bryce Underwood can live up to Urban Meyer's God-like blueprint in 2026? Let us know in the comments.
