Urban Meyer Stopped Recruiting Louisiana for This Reason: Not Gonna Beat My Face Against the Wall

There was a time when Urban Meyer served as the coach of Florida. From 2005 to 2010, he worked with the Gators. Meyer recently recounted an incident from his coaching days in Florida.

Speaking with the Triple Option Podcast, Meyer spoke about the troubles he faced when trying to bring talent in from Louisiana.

"When I was head coach of Florida, we played around in Louisiana, and then we would get to the dance floor with a great player. And then he wouldn't come. So I said we're done, I am not flying into Louisiana again. I'm good. There's enough good players in Georgia and Florida, and I'm not going to go and beat my face against the wall and go in Louisiana," said Meyer

While it wasn't clear which player Meyer was pointing to, it was understandable that he was disappointed with that deal going south. Both literally and figuratively. Meyer would then choose other options to fill his roster.

Since then, Meyer's target has shifted. The likes of Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, Brandon Spikes, and the Pouncey twins (Maurkice and Mike) were all recruited by Meyer from these two states only.

With Louisiana, Meyer wasn't that lucky. Patrick Peterson was one such player who got away. The former NFL cornerback was on his radar, but at the last minute, he committed to LSU.

Meyer admitted that Nick Saban did find better success in the bayou. He got recruits, possibly because of his LSU connection, where he coached between 2000 and 2004.

Meyer also detailed another interesting facet about his coaching career regarding his days at Ohio.

Meyer Talks About His Old Rivalry With Michigan

When Urban Meyer is in the building, how can discussions about Michigan be far behind? That is exactly what happened when Meyer recently joined the Script podcast to share anecdotes about his other employers in Ohio.

Meyer not only spoke about Ohio but also about his rivals at Michigan.

"There's no — name another person who respects that school more than I do," said Meyer. "I'm including probably some people who have gone there. That's how much I respect that school. That's why we work so hard to beat them. I know their history. I was friends with Bo Schembechler. I was friends with Lloyd Carr, Gary Moeller. I know those great players."

Meyer's record against Michigan is unblemished. He is the only Ohio State coach since 1924 to remain undefeated against Michigan, closing his run with a dominant 62–39 victory in 2018.

Meyer's recollection from his coaching days gives us memories of the days gone by. It's a flashback to a great era of college football that defined generations.
