Urban Meyer told Kyle Whittingham he could “win a national title” at Michigan

Making the move from Utah to Michigan was significant change in Kyle Whittingham’s personal and professional life. Before making his move, he opened up to his mentor and longtime friend Urban Meyer, who gave Whittingham the encouragement he needed to arrive at Ann Arbor.

“When Kyle told me that, I said, ‘Kyle, it's a no-brainer. You can win a national title there,’” Meyer said on December 29. “This is a blue-blood program. You can get any player you want. You have elite academics.”

On Dec 26, Whittingham became Michigan's 22nd head coach, gaining access to elite recruiting and resources he never had at Utah. With that, he stepped up to winning the College Football Playoff National Championship.

His 2008 team had an undefeated 13-0 season, but did not win the championship. Whittingham is capable of architecting a winning team and season.

This opportunity came at a pivotal moment: Whittingham had been contemplating retirement before Michigan called. This unforeseen, one-time opportunity gives Whittingham the chance to add an illustrious feat to his career.

Coaching the Wolverines is a dream opportunity, but it comes with serious challenges. Meyer, 61, revealed what this head coach title entails for Whittingham before vouching for his skills.

“It’s a hard job. He’s going to be under scrutiny; he’s never been under before, you know, never been under before at Utah,” he said on Wake Up Barstool podcast. “...He’s a tough cat. That’s a tough dude, man. You’re going to see, you’re going to see.”

Whittingham, spent 32 years at Utah and was the head coach for 21 years. Despite a decorated career with 177 wins, Meyer explained that he will face new challenge with the Wolverines.

Kyle Whittigham put on test with Michigan Wolverines coaching job

The Michigan Wolverines hired Kyle Whittingham after 2025 ended with an underwhelming 9-4 overall record. It was also marred by controversies related to Whittingham’s predecessor, Sherrone Moore.

“What in the h***l happened up there?” Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast. “That’s very un-Wolverine like, what's taken place there the last few years…I'm going to say this, Coach Whitt has been at Utah and I love Utah. Utah doesn’t have the same pressures that other place has up north.”

The Wolverines are in need of a serious overhaul in their gameplan and mindset. Urban Meyer has faith in Whittingham and the team to make that happen this year.

“Kyle loves his team. He loves his players. The quarterback's got to get much better,” he said of Bryce Underwood on June 8.

While Meyer couldn’t be happier and is excited for Whittingham, this season is not without its challenges. Are you excited to see it unfold?
