Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham didn't expect to be back on a college sideline so soon after leaving Utah at the end of the 2025 season.

The longtime coach said he hadn't planned on taking another job until Michigan reached out following Sherrone Moore's departure. Once the Wolverines called, Whittingham decided it was an opportunity he wanted to pursue.

"I hadn't ruled it out," Whittingham said on The Rich Eisen Show. "I wasn't sure what direction I was gonna go, but I knew there was about half a dozen schools and if the opportunity arose, I couldn't say no. This was definitely on that list."

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show on July 28, Whittingham explained that his decision to leave Utah had already been made before Michigan's vacancy opened.

After leading the Utes for 21 seasons, he believed it was the right time for someone else to guide the program. Once the Wolverines reached out, however, there was little hesitation.

"It all fit," Whittingham said. "The stars aligned. My wife and I had already decided that if this opportunity came, it was a no-brainer. It wasn't, 'Let me think about it.' It was, 'Let's go. I'm in.'"

Michigan's history also played a major role. Whittingham pointed to the program's tradition and other factors that made Ann Arbor one of the few destinations he would seriously consider after leaving Utah.

"This place has got everything," Whittingham said. "Talk about resources, winning tradition, one of the greatest programs in college football history. The academics here are incredible. It's attractive from every angle."

Now, with fall camp approaching, Whittingham is focused less on how he arrived in Ann Arbor and more on where he wants to take the program after an offseason filled with change.

Michigan's new coach acknowledged that restoring stability is one of his first responsibilities after several years of off-field headlines.

Speaking during Big Ten Media Days on July 30, Whittingham said he hopes the conversation around Michigan begins shifting back to football instead of controversy.

"It's reality. There has been a lot of drama," Whittingham said. "Hopefully we can put the drama to bed. We're ready to proceed with the business of playing football, winning football games and graduating players."

The Wolverines have dealt with repeated distractions in recent years, from the Connor Stalions sign-stealing investigation to Moore's dismissal and the announcement that athletic director Warde Manuel will step down later this year.

Whittingham made it clear he doesn't believe those events define the current locker room. He said the players have handled a difficult stretch with maturity and remain eager to move forward.

Michigan opens preseason camp on August 5 before hosting Western Michigan on September 5 in Whittingham's debut. That game will offer the program its first opportunity to back up those expectations.
