Went Through a Lot: Bryce Underwood Admits Painful Reality After Poor Performance

Bryce Underwood is confronting the 'painful reality' of his inconsistent freshman season at Michigan. Following a disappointing Citrus Bowl loss, the quarterback is prioritizing a player-led locker room to spark a 2026 breakout.

"Just like the whole team, and everything that happened to us even after the season, I had to get over it. That was the only option we had. It’s the only option I had. We went through a lot, but I think we’re going to be more player-led this season. I feel like we are more of a team now,” said Underwood to the media on May 21.

Underwood's last conference game saw him go 8-18 with an interception and 63 passing yards in a 27-9 loss against Ohio State. This was followed by an unwanted Cheez-It Citrus Bowl outing. He ended up getting intercepted thrice against Texas in a 41-27 loss to Texas.

Eventually, the Michigan Wolverines football team had a competitive but ultimately disappointing season. They finished 9–4 overall and lost the Citrus Bowl to Texas (41–27). Still, Underwood showed flashes of brilliance.

His 2,400+ yards and 11 passing scores in his freshman year certainly did catch attention.

Though the defense was solid, it struggled against elite opponents like Texas and Indiana. Overall, the Wolverines were competitive but fell short of playoff contention. This time around, things will be different, Underwood believes, as he recently reflected on his first year.

Underwood Reflects On His Freshman Season

Bryce Underwood's first year with the Wolverines came with a lot of expectations. He was the top-ranked recruit in the 2025 class after all. Naturally, the fans were expecting him to touch the sky from the get-go.

"I’ve just touched the ground a little bit, sort of got my feet wet a little bit. I feel like that’s all anybody has seen from me," Underwood told On3.

In addition to his other stats, he also threw nine interceptions while completing 60.3% of his passes. He rushed for 392 yards and six touchdowns, while being sacked 21 times. If this is the benchmark he set, then there's more to come for sure.

New head coach Kyle Whittingham, too, is hopeful. Speaking to On3, he also shared his take on the matter.

"We found out a lot more about him, and he made some big strides this spring: his footwork, his pocket presence, his mechanics, his decision-making. He's taken a step forward in all those areas," admitted the head coach.

This year, Michigan has a QB coach in Koy Detmer. His presence is certainly going to elevate Underwood's game even further. Moreover, he also has the services of QB coach Jordan Palmer, who is guiding him.

This means a breakout season is on the cards at Ann Arbor for Bryce Underwood. More so with acclaimed WR Andrew Marsh returning, Michigan truly is a rightful contender for the title.
