What Did Brendan Sorsby Do? Why Georgia & Nebraska Are Banning Texas Tech From Future Matchups?

What started as a gambling case involving Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has now intensified into a huge dispute. The fallout has become so significant that schools are reconsidering future matchups with the Red Raiders.

"Nebraska will not schedule any contests vs. Texas Tech in any sport. If you currently have a future contest already scheduled, please connect with (athletic director) Troy (Dannen) immediately," instructed deputy athletic director, Haven Fields.

Brendan Sorsby, the quarterback of Texas Tech, was ruled ineligible by the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) after admitting to gambling, including bets placed on college football games during his time at Indiana. Nebraska's response to this was blunt.

While Sorsby seemed a possible pick in the 2026 Supplemental Draft, a Texas judge recently granted a temporary injunction that allows him to play in the 2026 season, provided he has a two-game suspension and continues treatment for his addiction, as per The Athletic.

Nebraska and Georgia have instructed their athletic departments not to schedule future contests against Texas Tech in light of the latest ruling. There are no games scheduled between Nebraska and Texas Tech for 2026.

“Based on recent developments, Georgia Athletics will not schedule future contests against Texas Tech until further notice,” Will Lawler wrote. “Please review your sport’s current schedules and future scheduling plans."

The Georgia compliance director, Will Lawler, sent a note to the coaching staff on Monday afternoon to review their sport's current schedules and future scheduling plans.

He suggested that any of the games currently include Texas Tech or are actively scheduling discussions with Texas Tech, must notify their sports administrator as soon as possible, so they can work on the situation moving forward.

Big Ten athletic directors and commissioner Tony Petitti are going to discuss a league-wide ban on Texas Tech at a meeting on Wednesday, according to The Athletic. The outcome will define how future eligibility disputes are handled nationwide.

Brendan Sorsby's Court Victory Changes Everything for NCAA

Just weeks after facing the possibility of losing his final season of eligibility, the Texas Tech QB secured a temporary injunction that allows him to play in 2026.

"Sorsby’s attorneys argued he was addicted to gambling, which means the NCAA was “effectively punishing Mr. Sorsby for suffering from a mental health condition,” wrote Matt Baker of The Athletic.

Before the ruling, Sorsby was heavily linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a possible pick in the Supplemental Draft that could have been held around June-July.

Baker argued the ruling highlights the need for consistent NCAA enforcement and congressional action, saying the NCAA needs stronger tools to address gambling-related violations.
