Why This 129-Student High School Wants a $21M Football Facility

Deep in the heart of Texas lies a football culture shaped by some of the game’s most storied teams. This state has contributed immensely to the sport. Be it college football or molding high school talent to become future NFL players, they are at the top. A Texas High School is now taking up a new project that is already turning heads.

The Plains Independent School District (ISD) is all set to build a new facility that will cost them approximately $21 million. However, there is a reason the school is opting for this project.

“You know, we’ve got phenomenal facilities everywhere but down here, so that was part of the thinking behind it,” the Plains ISD superintendent, Scott Mills, shared with EverythingLubbock.com. “But as far as this whole project coming together, this is all about the community side of the term ‘school community,’ because this project’s going to be part of the community.”

The town is home to 1,400 citizens. While the school has 421 students enrolled, 129 of them are in high school. Renovations have not occurred at the current football facility in over 50 years. The sports complex project shows how the school thinks about its students' future beyond academics. What new features will this renovation bring?

The facility will include a two-story structure with 50 yards of indoor field turf. Right now, it's a hill next to the football field.

For students, the locker rooms will undergo renovations and come with updated facilities. For better physical training, there will be weight rooms. There will be dedicated offices for coaches and a room for the evaluation of the players' film. However, the film room is said to be "multi-purpose."

While the Texas high school is spending $21 million on its new football facility, Westside High School in Omaha inaugurated the first phase of an athletic complex in February. The new facility is worth $34 million.

When will the Texas high school's new complex be functional?

The project is set to break ground in April and is planned to be completed by October 2027.  And in case the Texas high school is able to manage some funding, they have a plan. With the remaining amount, the school might focus on improving the audience experience.

The Texas high school might add home stands, a press box, and concession stands as well. At the same time, they are making the sports facility open to other students.

“We’re going to have features in this project that even our band kids, our theater kids, that there’s going to be a film room in there,” Mills said.

The idea of the Texas high school project is not new. It was originally included in a bond project years back, but it ran into a budget crunch. But this time, the Plains Independent School District is making it happen.
