Wolverines bolster defense with former UCLA signee
Michigan's linebacker room just got a serious boost. Weston Port, a former UCLA signee, is now a Wolverine.
Port committed to Michigan on Monday evening, as reported by Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine. His 247Sports scouting report makes clear why the staff fought to get him back.
"He has a crazy motor, and you love the relentless style he plays with. He's a tough, physical kid who's also strong against the run and is a very instinctive player," the report read, per 247Sports.
That lines up with what he did back in high school, too. Port was a three-star in UCLA's 2024 class before he decommitted, ranked 684th overall at the time, per GBM Wolverine.
His ties to this staff run deep. Whittingham offered Port well before he ever decommitted from UCLA, back when Whittingham coached in Utah, which was actually the third school to offer him.
That history made Michigan the heavy favorite once Port reopened his recruitment. Both the Rivals and the 247Sports crystal ball had the Wolverines pegged to land him.
He's listed at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds as per On3. At San Juan Hills High School in California, Port racked up 316 tackles across three varsity seasons, plus 61 tackles for loss, 21 sacks, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and three pass breakups. He even returned one of those picks for a touchdown.
The only catch is he hasn't played in two years because of his mission, so it'll take him some time to get back into football shape.
He fits best as an inside guy, but just like Frederick Ford, he can move around and rush the passer or blitz too. With Port joining the class, Michigan moved up in the 2027 recruiting rankings.
Michigan’s 2027 class has climbed into the top 15 nationally
Michigan's 2027 class is now ranked at No.13 on On3's 2027 Football Team Recruiting Rankings with 19 recruits. In the Big Ten, they are at No.4.
That run started back in early May, when the Wolverines picked up four commits in four days. Four-star receiver Quentin Burrell and four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad were part of that stretch.
This is the same staff that plenty of people doubted could recruit at a national level outside of Utah. They now have several more top targets, including five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, still on the board, who is set to commit on July 1.
Port's commitment isn't just about fixing a need. It's another sign this class is becoming one of the better ones in the country.
Do you think Port can develop into a real contributor once he gets back to football shape? Let us know in the comments.
