Wreck 'Em: Brendan Sorsby Breaks Silence After Court Issued Injunction
Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby won a key legal battle against the NCAA on Monday, June 8, earning a temporary injunction. After receiving a significant penalty and taking his fight to court, Sorsby has finally spoken out.
While Sorsby restored his eligibility to play for the 2026 season, it comes with a caveat. Judge Ken Curry’s ruling stated that Sorsby will not “in the game day activities for the first two games of the Texas Tech 2026 football season.” Aware of the stern punishment, Sorsby showed excitement in his Instagram post on June 8.
“Wreck Em,” read the caption of the post, a well-known rallying cry and slogan associated with Texas Tech.
He posted a picture of himself adding his quote.
“I’m very grateful for the endless support I have received throughout the entire process,” wrote Sorsby. “This opportunity comes with responsibility to remain focused on my personal growth, the ability to learn from the experience, and to use my situation to help others going forward."
Sorsby will not avoid punishment entirely, as he is still required to sit out the first two games of the season. The quarterback will be sidelined during the games against Abilene Christian on September 5th and Oregon State on September 12th.
His first appearance on the gridiron will be against the Houston Cougars on September 18.
Even after the suspension, the ruling is a significant victory for Sorsby. After all, he once appeared unlikely to see the field at all in 2026. Meanwhile, the decision also benefits the Red Raiders. After a productive offseason in the transfer portal, they have picked up playoff buzz.
Brendan Sorsby Arrives After Breakout 2025 Season
Coming off a career-best campaign in 2025, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound signal-caller entered the transfer portal after posting 2,800 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. His performance earned him second-team All-Big 12 recognition from the league's coaches.
Sorsby's arm talent allows him to make throws from various angles. Along with it, his mobility adds another dimension to his game. He has recorded 1,305 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns over the last four seasons.
The schedule has its own challenges. Texas Tech would travel to Cincinnati, Colorado, Oklahoma State, and Arizona, all of which could test them.
However, despite the favorable ruling, Sorsby's status remains uncertain. The NCAA has already filed a notice of appeal and is expected to seek emergency relief from an appellate court in an effort to overturn the injunction.
Because the legal process could move quickly, a final decision may be reached before the Red Raiders open their season on Sept. 5.
